Alexa Skill Commands
Note: Amazon is working to address issues with Alexa recognizing the new “ask AnyList” and “tell AnyList” in some locations outside the United States. Learn More
Below are examples of the commands you can use with the AnyList skill.
On this page
Adding Items to a List
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to add apples to my grocery list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to add toothpaste to my packing list”
- “Alexa, open AnyList and add paper towels to Costco”
Note: Alexa will respond, “AnyList added ITEM to LIST”. If Alexa's response does not begin with “AnyList added…”, then Alexa added the item to one of its own lists instead and the item will not appear in AnyList. Learn More
Removing Items from a List
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to remove butter from my grocery list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to delete towels from my packing list”
Crossing Off Items on a List
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to cross off apples from my grocery list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to cross toothpaste off my packing list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to mark toothbrush off my packing list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to check off bacon on shopping list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to scratch bread off my grocery list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to complete soap on packing list”
Uncrossing Items on a List
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to uncross oranges on my grocery list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to uncheck toothbrush off my packing list”
Undoing a List Modification
To undo the most recent modification to a list, such as removing the last item that was added, you can say things like:
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to undo that”
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to scratch that”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to add that back”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to uncross that”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to remove that”
Reading the Items on a List
- “Alexa, ask AnyList what’s on my grocery list”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to read my packing list”
Viewing a List
When using an Alexa device with a screen, such as the Echo Show, you can view and interact your lists by saying things like:
- “Alexa, tell AnyList view the grocery list”
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to show my packing list”
Setting a Default List
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to make LIST_NAME my default list”
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to set my default list to LIST_NAME”
After setting a default list, if you omit the list name from any of the list commands above, the command will apply to your default list. For example, saying “ask AnyList to add apples”, will add apples to the default list.
Note: For Alexa devices with a screen, such as the Echo Show, omitting the list name from a command while a list is being shown on the screen, will apply the command to that list, NOT the default list.
Viewing Your Recipes
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to open my beef stew recipe”
- “Alexa, tell AnyList to show my chicken recipes”
- “Alexa, open AnyList and show my recipes for roasted potatoes”
Interacting With Recipes
- “Alexa, read the ingredients”
- “Alexa, read the steps”
- “Alexa, next ingredient”
- “Alexa, next step”
- “Alexa, scroll ingredients down”
- “Alexa, scroll steps down”
Accessing Your Meal Plan
- “Alexa, ask AnyList what’s for dinner tonight?”
- “Alexa, ask AnyList what’s on my meal plan for tomorrow?”
- “Alexa, ask AnyList to show my meal plan”
